The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison (DCSSL) has been plunged into mourning following the death of another traffic law enforcement officer on the N2 near Mkhondo.

Provincial Inspector Dumisane Ndlovu (49) was fatally injured on Thursday, 5 February 2026, while conducting a routine stop-and-check operation on the N2 road outside Mkhondo, in the direction of Phongola. He was struck by a minibus taxi at around 17h00 and was declared dead at the scene.

Inspector Ndlovu was attached to the Piet Retief Cost Centre and had been carrying out his official duties at the time of the incident. His death marks the fourth loss of a law enforcement officer on the same stretch of road in similar circumstances, raising serious concerns about the safety of traffic officers working along this busy route.

A case of culpable homicide is currently under investigation by the authorities.

Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss. He said the department was devastated by the death of Inspector Ndlovu, noting that the shortage of traffic officers in the province makes every loss even more painful.

“We do not have enough traffic officers to police our roads. Losing one officer cripples our efforts to enhance road safety,” said Macie.

The MEC extended heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the late inspector, describing his death as a painful loss not only to the department but to the province as a whole.
