A case of culpable homicide has been opened by Mpumalanga police following the tragic death of a five-year-old Grade R learner from Thanda Primary School in Emjejane, Nkomazi Local Municipality.

The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon as learners were preparing to board their scholar transport after school. According to the provincial Department of Education, the learner was accidentally run over by a reversing scholar transport bus. It is alleged that the child was positioned in the vehicle’s blind spot and could not be seen by the driver.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Officials from the Department’s Inclusive Education and Wellness Directorate visited the school and the bereaved family on Friday, 6 February, to provide psychosocial support services. Senior departmental officials, led by the Head of Department, Ms Lucy Moyane, will also visit the school to gather detailed information regarding the cause of the incident and to convey their condolences.

A delegation from the Department of Education and the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport paid their respects to the family, who expressed appreciation for the support, prayers and solidarity shown during this difficult time. The family has indicated their intention to lay their loved one to rest on Sunday, 8 February 2026, subject to final confirmation.

The Department has extended its heartfelt condolences to the grieving family and the entire Thanda Primary School community.

May the soul of the departed rest in eternal peace.
