The Lebombo Port of Entry has returned to normal operations following a surge in traveller and cargo movements during the Christmas period, the Border Management Authority (BMA) has confirmed.

BMA Commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato said more than 18 450 travellers were successfully processed exiting South Africa through the Lebombo border post on Christmas Day, 25 December 2025. Most travellers were cleared through automated systems, while about 450 people, mainly women and children, were processed manually and are still being fully captured and reconciled on the Enhanced Movement Control System.

Dr Masiapato reported that no major interceptions were recorded in vulnerable border areas on Christmas Day, attributing this to heightened patrols and law enforcement visibility. However, 88 individuals were declared undesirable after being found to have overstayed the legally permitted 90 days in the country.

In the early hours of 26 December, BMA officials intercepted more than 80 pairs of Nike sneakers being smuggled into South Africa. One individual suspected of facilitating illegal migration was also arrested and charged with aiding and abetting under the Immigration Act. All those involved are being processed in line with immigration and law enforcement regulations.

On the movement of goods, the Commissioner said approximately 805 trucks were cleared at KM7, travelling from South Africa into Mozambique and onwards to the Port of Maputo. As a result, the N4 corridor leading to the Lebombo Port of Entry is currently free of congestion.

“The Border Management Authority remains fully deployed and vigilant, ensuring the smooth movement of legitimate travellers and cargo, while preventing illegal activities, especially during this peak festive period,” Dr Masiapato said.

While operations at the Lebombo border post have stabilised, the BMA said it will continue to closely monitor the situation and provide updates where necessary. Members of the public are encouraged to report suspicious activities through Operation HI-TIVISE on 0801 229 019 or via the BMA website.
