Seven people lost their lives in a devastating head-on collision on the N4 toll road between Machadodorp and Belfast in the early hours of Saturday morning, 27 December 2025.

The crash, which involved two sedans, occurred at around 01h00. Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, where seven occupants were declared dead. One other person sustained serious injuries and was transported to a hospital in Belfast, where they are receiving medical treatment.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation. However, preliminary information suggests that dangerous overtaking and excessive speed may have contributed to the collision.

Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Mr Jackie Macie, once again urged motorists to exercise extreme caution on the province’s roads, particularly during night-time travel.

“We are again appealing to motorists to be extremely vigilant, especially at night when visibility is reduced. Roads are shared spaces and drivers must do all in their might to prevent needless loss of life from deadly crashes,” said MEC Macie. He also encouraged drivers to take regular breaks when travelling long distances to avoid fatigue.

MEC Macie conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives in the crash and wished the injured survivor a speedy recovery.

Authorities have reiterated their call for road users to obey traffic rules, avoid risky behaviour and prioritise safety, especially during the busy festive season when traffic volumes are high.
