Lebombo border returns to normal after festive rush
December 26, 2025Patron shoots DJ, then himself in Masoyi tavern
A Christmas Eve celebration ended in tragedy after a patron allegedly shot a DJ before turning the firearm on himself at a tavern in Masoyi, near White River.
The incident occurred at around 11.30pm on Wednesday, 24 December 2025, at a tavern in Mganduzweni Trust. Police in Masoyi were conducting routine patrols along the R538 road as part of the 2025/2026 Operation Festive Season when they noticed a group of people leaving the establishment.
Upon stopping to investigate, officers discovered that a shooting had taken place inside the tavern. Two adult males were found with gunshot injuries. Emergency medical personnel were called to the scene and both men were certified dead.
According to preliminary information, the DJ had been playing music for patrons when he stopped and began packing his equipment, indicating that it was time for the tavern to close. Some patrons allegedly insisted that he continue playing because it was Christmas. An argument reportedly followed, during which a 28-year-old patron allegedly produced a firearm and shot the DJ before turning the gun on himself.
Police have opened a case of murder as well as an inquest. The firearm used in the incident has not yet been recovered. Early reports indicate that the tavern is a licensed establishment.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, has strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a senseless act of violence. He has called for a thorough investigation into how a firearm was allowed into the liquor premises, noting that dangerous weapons are strictly prohibited in such establishments.
“The increase in shooting incidents within liquor premises is alarming and detrimental to our society,” said Mkhwanazi. “Tavern owners must take responsibility for the safety of their patrons and employees. Failure to comply with safety regulations carries legal consequences. A life has been lost here, and such a tragic incident cannot be allowed to pass without consequences.”
Police investigations are continuing.
