Mpumalanga Marks World AIDS Day in Nkomazi

Mpumalanga Marks World AIDS Day

Mpumalanga has commemorated World AIDS Day with a provincial gathering held at Kamhlushwa Stadium in the Nkomazi Local Municipality. The event brought together government leaders, traditional authorities and civil-society representatives to reaffirm the province’s commitment to fighting HIV, stigma and gender-based violence.

The day opened with a symbolic gesture as Inkosi Shongwe was presented with two cattle during a gifting ceremony. This act, organisers said, reflected appreciation for traditional leadership in strengthening community health initiatives.

Premier Mandla Ndlovu led the proceedings, accompanied by Health MEC Sasekani Manzini, Members of the Executive Council, Deputy Director-General Peter Nyoni from the Office of the Premier, Executive Mayors, Councillors, Traditional Leaders and members of the Mpumalanga Provincial AIDS Council (MPAC).

A representative of people living with HIV delivered a strong message condemning ongoing Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF), urging men to stop harming young women and girls by infecting them with HIV. The speaker called for accountability, compassion and safer behaviour within communities.

Premier Ndlovu appealed for unity and understanding, emphasising that people living with HIV should never face discrimination. He encouraged communities to foster acceptance, support and mutual respect.

The commemoration reinforced the province’s commitment to reducing new infections, strengthening prevention programmes and ensuring dignity for all affected individuals.
