The legendary Comrades Marathon continues to capture the hearts of South Africans, with entries for the 2026 edition selling out in under 10 hours on Monday night.
The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) confirmed that the entry cap of 22,000 runners had been reached, making it one of the fastest sell-outs in the race’s history. The first 2,600 entries, reserved for CMA members and those who have completed the marathon 10 times, were released last week and quickly taken up. The remaining 19,400 general entries opened on Monday morning and were sold out by evening.
“This overwhelming response is a testament to the unbelievable passion and support you have for The Ultimate Human Race,” the CMA shared in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
While organisers increased the entry limit from 20,000 in 2017 to 22,000 for 2026, it remains uncertain whether additional entries will be made available. Officials noted that safety considerations play a key role in determining the maximum number of participants allowed.
The 99th edition of the iconic ultra-marathon will be an ‘up’ run from Durban to Pietermaritzburg, covering approximately 87 kilometres. Scheduled for 14 June 2026, the race will start at Durban City Hall and conclude at Scottsville Racecourse, continuing the legacy of one of the world’s greatest endurance events.
