On March 31, Mbombela Stadium hosted two significant events, including a breakfast session and the main gathering. Organized by the Department of Employment and Labour, the event aimed to tackle the pressing issue of unemployment in Mpumalanga. Minister Makhosazana Meth officially handed over R460 million, funding 9,600 jobs within the province.

Addressing Unemployment in Mpumalanga

Sonia Morotoba emphasized that the initiative seeks to reduce the province’s high unemployment rate. Lucky Mkhonto further educated attendees on the Unemployment Insurance Act (UIA), explaining the process of applying for benefits and the timeframe for receiving payments. The UIA requires employers to register and declare their employees every month. Benefits include:

Unemployment benefits – paid within 15 working days

Dependent benefits – paid within 10 working days

Individuals can apply for these benefits online or visit their nearest labour office. Unemployed youth were encouraged to register with the Labour Department, allowing them to be considered for job opportunities through government-private sector partnerships.

Government and Businesses Collaborate for Change

Deputy Minister of Employment and Labour reiterated the department’s commitment to simplifying employment processes. Efforts include assisting businesses with UIF registration and compliance. The department has visited four provinces so far and aims to monitor the allocated funds to ensure they effectively reduce unemployment.

Minister Meth, addressing attendees including Chief Nkosi, stressed that the initiative is about empowering small businesses and fostering economic growth. She emphasized that Mpumalanga is not just waiting for opportunities but actively creating them.

Fifteen business partners have been selected to distribute the allocated funds, ensuring training and stipends for job seekers. The funding allocations include:

Ndims Business Enterprise Group – R43 million

Nkangala Skills Centre – R32.5 million

Top Visual Multimedia – R31 million

Amo’s Community – R30 million

Immaculate Events & Management Solutions – R23 million

M2 Engineering Academy – R23 million

Community Enterprise Fund – R27 million

Yenzo IT Solutions – R14 million

Thakhu Trading – R8.8 million

Mpumalanga Economic Growth Agency – R8.7 million

Kesho Ink – R7.4 million

Snovuyoletu – R2.4 million

To enhance accessibility, 17 buses will provide transport to remote areas, ensuring that even those unable to travel to labour offices can benefit from these services.

In a promising statement, the minister announced that all attendees would be employed, with lucky individuals signing a register—perhaps a pledge that will not be broken.

With this funding, Mpumalanga is taking a firm stand against unemployment, creating opportunities, and driving economic transformation. The province is proving to be the heartbeat of South Africa.
