MEC Urges Cautious Driving for Holidays

MEC Jackie Macie Urges Safe Driving Ahead of Easter Holidays

Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security, and Liaison, Jackie Macie, has called on motorists to drive cautiously to ensure the safety of children on the roads.

Recent statistics from the provincial Department of Community Safety, Security, and Liaison indicate that a significant number of children aged between five and 19 have been victims of fatal and serious car accidents.

With the first school term ending on March 28 and families preparing to travel, Macie urged drivers to obey traffic laws and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy.

“As many families travel to different destinations, drivers must be mindful of wet weather conditions, plan their journeys in advance, and follow the rules. Transport owners and drivers should check that their cars and trailers are in good condition and avoid overloading, as overloaded trailers contribute to crashes. Law enforcement officers will be on high alert to ensure compliance,” he stated.

Macie also announced that the provincial Easter Safety Campaign will be launched soon, outlining plans for the Easter long weekend. This initiative will align with the 365 Days for Road Safety Plan of Action 2025.
