Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Velenkosini Hlabisa, has lauded the Nkangala District Municipality in Mpumalanga for its outstanding service delivery and alignment with the goals of the Government of National Unity (GNU).

Hlabisa made these remarks during a visit to Mpumalanga, led by President Cyril Ramaphosa, as part of ongoing engagements between national and provincial governments to improve intergovernmental coordination and service delivery.

Nkangala: A Model of Good Governance

Nkangala District Municipality, one of Mpumalanga’s three district municipalities, encompasses economic hubs such as Witbank, Middelburg, and Delmas. Known for its strategic importance in mining and energy, the municipality has emerged as a model of efficient governance under the District Development Model (DDM).

Hlabisa highlighted the municipality’s remarkable achievement of securing clean audits for nine consecutive years, including 2023 and 2024.

“This reflects strong financial management and accountability. While challenges exist in some municipalities, Nkangala stands out as an example of excellence,” said Hlabisa.

He praised the municipality’s well-maintained infrastructure and effective governance, calling it a testament to what is achievable through collaboration and commitment.

Intergovernmental Collaboration Under GNU

President Ramaphosa’s visit to Mpumalanga marks the third such engagement under the GNU framework, following similar visits to KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo. The GNU emphasizes collaboration across political lines to address South Africa’s pressing challenges.

Ramaphosa commended Mpumalanga’s efforts to align its ambitions with national priorities, emphasizing the province’s strategic importance as an inter-provincial and inter-continental trade hub.

“We will work together across political parties to improve livelihoods. Nkangala showcases what is possible when leadership aligns with the priorities of the people,” Ramaphosa said.

Prioritizing Local Development

Premier Mandla Ndlovu echoed Hlabisa’s sentiments, highlighting the role of national support in unlocking provincial and municipal potential.

“Our people are anxiously awaiting the outcomes of these engagements, knowing their concerns are being prioritized,” Ndlovu said.

He also emphasized the province’s role as a gateway for trade and tourism, showcasing its ability to attract domestic and international opportunities.
