The Mpumalanga Department of Health has introduced 30 fully equipped emergency medical services (EMS) response vehicles as part of its Health Contingency Plan for the festive season.

Health MEC Sasekani Manzini led the launch event at Mbombela Stadium on December 9, alongside Kgoshi Lameck Mokoena, chairperson of the Mpumalanga House of Traditional and Khoisan Leaders; Khanyisa Mhlanga, the City of Mbombela’s MMC for sports, arts, and culture; and Million Shongwe, Ehlanzeni District Municipality’s MMC for health.

Strengthening Emergency Response

The EMS vehicles are part of an initiative to bolster the province’s healthcare capacity and ensure rapid responses to health emergencies.

“This plan aims to minimise operational disruptions, maintain hospital and clinic continuity, and provide accessible healthcare services, particularly during the festive season when patient numbers surge due to road accidents and gender-based violence,” said Manzini.

Call for Responsible Use

Manzini emphasized the importance of using EMS resources responsibly, cautioning against prank calls and attacks on emergency personnel.

“One ambulance serves up to 10,000 patients. Misuse or damage to these vehicles hampers our ability to provide timely care, especially in rural areas,” she noted.

The new ambulances will improve healthcare access and ensure patients receive immediate attention during emergencies, enhancing the province’s ability to deliver quality services.

Manzini also urged residents to adopt healthy habits during the festive season:

• Preventative Care: Visit healthcare facilities for early medical check-ups to address potential issues before they escalate.
• Safe Practices: Use free condoms provided at health centers to encourage safe sexual behavior.

With these vehicles, Mpumalanga aims to strengthen its healthcare system and provide life-saving services, particularly in underserved rural areas. The contingency plan underscores the province’s commitment to ensuring uninterrupted, quality healthcare during one of the busiest times of the year.
