Kaizer Chiefs have expressed their sorrow following the death of Peter ‘Pele’ Mokotedi, one of the club’s iconic players from 1980 to 1983. The midfielder, affectionately nicknamed “Fuduwa” (Stir), was celebrated for his dazzling dribbling, speed, and sharp goal-scoring instincts.
Journey to Stardom
Mokotedi’s football journey began with Naughty Boys FC in Mabopane, where his exceptional talent caught the attention of professional scouts. He was recruited by Witbank Black Aces (Amazayoni) after a standout performance in a friendly match. Soon after, Kaizer Chiefs secured his signature, bringing him to their ranks in 1980.
At Chiefs, Mokotedi played alongside legendary figures like Pule ‘Ace’ Ntsoelengoe, Nelson ‘Teenage’ Dladla, and Jan ‘Festival Malombo’ Lechaba.
Unforgettable Moments
Mokotedi’s most notable contribution came in the 1980 Mainstay Cup semifinal first leg against Moroka Swallows, where he scored twice in a thrilling 5-5 draw. This match, which also saw Ntsoelengoe score a hat-trick, inspired the film Way of Life Mainstay Cup.
His magical performances earned him admiration from fans, who recognized him as a folk hero in the gold and black jersey of the Amakhosi.
Honoring a Legend
In 2014, Mokotedi and former Chiefs defender Dick “Skipper” Molewa were honored by the Mabopane Local Football Association and the Mabopane Network Forum. The ceremony, attended by Chiefs Chairman Dr. Kaizer Motaung, celebrated their contributions to South African football. Mokotedi received a framed Chiefs jersey signed by players and management as a token of appreciation.
Chiefs’ Tribute
In a heartfelt statement, Kaizer Chiefs paid tribute to Mokotedi, highlighting his legacy:
“Fuduwa created and scored memorable goals for the Phefeni Glamour Boys… Folk hero, Legends Never Die.”
Peter ‘Pele’ Mokotedi will be remembered as a football icon who left an indelible mark on Kaizer Chiefs and South African soccer.
