The United Nations Security Council has adopted a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in
Gaza during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. The legally binding text demands the unconditional
release of all hostages and urges expanded humanitarian access to civilians across the Gaza Strip.
South African Minister of International Relations, Dr. Naledi Pandor, welcomed the move, stating,
“South Africa has called for a ceasefire many weeks ago, and we are pleased that the Security
Council has finally agreed on a resolution for a long-term ceasefire during Ramadan, with work
towards a permanent ceasefire.”
The resolution was adopted with 14 votes in favour and one abstention from the United States. It
follows a failed attempt last week to pass a US-drafted text calling for a ceasefire without an explicit
demand for immediate implementation.
While the current resolution emphasizes the urgent need for increased humanitarian aid and lifting
of barriers, its implementation remains uncertain. Israel is expected to criticize the text for not
explicitly condemning Hamas, a key demand from Israel and the US.
The adoption highlights divisions within the Security Council over the handling of the Israeli-
Palestinian conflict. Elected non-permanent members drove the initiative amid concerns over civilian
suffering and lack of progress towards a negotiated solution.
As violence persists, the resolution represents a step towards de-escalation during Ramadan.
However, its long-term impact hinges on the willingness of all parties to abide by its terms and work
towards a lasting peace.
