Candidates double-listed across multiple party lists

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has revealed that 42 candidates have been nominated
on more than one party list, implicating 39 political parties in this issue. Notably, one candidate was
nominated as both an independent and on a party list. This disclosure came after yesterday’s 17:00
deadline, by which parties were required to inform the IEC if their nominated candidates appeared
on another party’s list or as independent candidates.

The public now has the opportunity to inspect the lists of party and independent candidates. These
lists will be available at the IEC’s national, provincial, and municipal offices between 09:00 and 17:00
today and tomorrow.

Furthermore, the IEC reported that a total of 14,662 candidates have been nominated to contest the
887 seats available in the National Assembly and the nine provincial legislatures.

The commission is scheduled to release the final list of candidates contesting the May 29 elections
on April 10, 2024.

While the double-listing of candidates across multiple party lists raises concerns about potential
conflicts of interest and adherence to electoral guidelines, the IEC’s transparency in disclosing this
information allows for public scrutiny and accountability in the electoral process.
