In an Objective Exposé, Officials Scrutinize ‘Prophet’s’ Claims
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has swiftly contested claims made by
controversial self-proclaimed prophet Shepherd Bushiri during his extradition case in Malawi.
Bushiri alleged that the National Director of Public Prosecutions had flown to Malawi to
defend him and his wife Mary, further accusing the NPA of fabricating evidence against the
couple.
However, the Department of Justice spokesperson Chrispin Phiri vehemently dismissed
these assertions as “outrageous and out of touch” with the NPA’s actual role. “The NPA
doesn’t defend people, it prosecutes them,” Phiri clarified, underscoring the prosecutorial
nature of the authority.
NPA spokesperson Mthunzi Mhanga echoed similar sentiments, denying any evidence
fabrication and stating that “All prosecutorial decisions are based on evidence and the NPA
is guided by law, constitution and NPA policy in its prosecution process.”
This latest rebuttal adds to the ongoing saga surrounding Bushiri, who fled South Africa in
2020 while out on bail facing charges of fraud and money laundering. His controversial
claims of an attempted assassination and lack of protection from authorities have been
scrutinized, with the diplomatic community closely monitoring the potential extradition
process and its implications for South Africa-Malawi relations.
As the extradition case unfolds, the NPA maintains its stance, refuting Bushiri’s allegations
and affirming its commitment to upholding the law and due process.
