A pilot was killed on Saturday when his light aircraft crashed near an airfield in Ermelo,
Mpumalanga. The Civil Aviation Authority of South Africa is investigating the incident in
conjunction with the South African Police Service (SAPS), who have opened a case of
“Emergency services were called to the crash site on Saturday morning, but
unfortunately the pilot was certified dead,” said SAPS spokesperson Colonel Donald
Preliminary investigations indicate the pilot was alone in the plane when it crashed.
“More details will be shared as they become available, but it appears the plane was
travelling from Bethlehem in the Free State,” Mdhluli stated.
The plane went down next to the Ermelo airfield. The SAPS commissioner for
Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, said the Civil
Aviation Authority and police will thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding
