Walmart Announces First Branded Stores In South Africa

American retail giant Walmart has confirmed plans to launch its first-ever stores under its own brand in South Africa before the end of 2025. Although Walmart already operates locally through Massmart, which owns chains such as Makro and Game, this marks the company’s first full-brand entry into Africa

The upcoming outlets will stock a diverse range of goods—ranging from fresh groceries and household supplies to apparel, electronics and tech—presented in well-designed stores featuring wide aisles and its signature friendly service

Walmart emphasises locally sourced products by partnering with small and medium-sized South African suppliers, aiming to blend its “Every Day Low Prices” philosophy with the cultural essence of the region

Store sites are currently under development, with Walmart expected to announce official opening dates in October and launch some locations by year-end.

This expansion promises to deepen competition in the South African retail landscape, taking on established names such as Shoprite, Woolworths and Pick n Pay, as well as online rivals like Amazon and Takealot.
