Thirty-Two Limpopo Drivers Arrested During Phuza Weekend Operation

Law enforcement officials in Limpopo arrested 32 drivers for drunk driving during the province’s Phuza Weekend campaign, which ran from Friday, 17 October, to Sunday, 19 October.

The operation, led by the Department of Transport and Community Safety, was aimed at curbing reckless driving, enforcing compliance, and promoting safer roads across all districts.

According to the department, the highest alcohol reading was recorded in the Mopani District, where one motorist registered 1.12mg/1000ml. Mopani also accounted for the largest number of arrests, with 15 motorists detained. Capricorn recorded seven arrests, Vhembe four, and Waterberg six, while Sekhukhune District reported none.

MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Violet Mathye, praised officers for their tireless efforts in safeguarding communities but voiced concern about the persistence of negligent and reckless driving.

“We urge all road users to prioritise safety and make responsible choices. Let us work together to build a culture of responsible driving and ensure our roads are safe for everyone,” she said.

The department confirmed it will continue working with law enforcement agencies to enforce traffic laws, raise awareness, and encourage motorists to avoid drinking and driving. Community members are also urged to report reckless behaviour to authorities.
