Suspect Arrested for Crystal Meth Possession

A 44-year-old man has been arrested in Siyabuswa for allegedly being in possession of crystal meth, following an early morning police operation on Friday, 28 November 2025.

According to police, officers were conducting routine patrols along the R568 road between Maphotla and Siyabuswa when they spotted a white Nissan NP200 bakkie with Gauteng registration plates. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver sped off, resulting in a high-speed chase. The suspect was eventually cornered and apprehended.

A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of two containers filled with a white powder believed to be crystal meth. The substance, hidden inside bags, has an estimated street value of R110,000. Police also seized the vehicle as part of the ongoing investigation.

The suspect, identified as Obi Anthony Okoshuku, first appeared in the Mdutjana Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 1 December 2025. He was remanded in custody and is expected to return to court on 8 December 2025.

Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, praised the officers involved, stating that the arrest dealt a significant blow to drug trafficking in the province. “The arrest of this suspect and the recovery of the suspected drugs is a significant step in curbing the spread of illicit substances in our communities,” he said.
