Ramaphosa Vows Fair US Trade Deal

President Cyril Ramaphosa says South Africa will not be bullied in trade negotiations with the United States.

Answering questions in Parliament, Ramaphosa confirmed that a government delegation is in Washington holding talks with US officials, legislators and business leaders. “Our objective is to safeguard market access, attract investment and strengthen ties,” he said.

The president noted that the US is South Africa’s second-largest trading partner. To cushion local businesses from the recent 30% tariffs, the government has introduced support programmes, including funding to boost competitiveness and diversify export markets.

Ramaphosa dismissed criticism from EFF leader Julius Malema, who accused the government of appeasement. “We will not be bullied. We stand as a sovereign country negotiating the best deal,” he said.

He added that South Africa’s leverage lies in its mineral resources and processing capacity and confirmed that a new ambassador to Washington will be announced soon.
