Police Secure Arrests in Journalist Disappearance

Police have achieved a major breakthrough in the disappearance of journalist Aserie Ndlovu and his partner, Zodwa Mdhluli, following a coordinated cross‑province operation on 4 May 2025.

The operation, involving Gauteng and Mpumalanga police and led by Deputy National Commissioner of Crime Detection Lieutenant‑General Shadrack Sibiya alongside Acting Mpumalanga Provincial Commissioner Major‑General Zeph Mkhwanazi, resulted in the questioning and subsequent arrest of four suspects.

Investigators allege the first suspect was the last person seen with the missing couple. The remaining three were found in possession of vehicle parts believed to belong to the missing journalist’s car. One of those arrested is a known mechanic in the KwaMhlanga area. Two Volkswagen Citi Golfs linked to the suspects have been seized for forensic examination.

In light of these developments, the South African Police Service (SAPS) has reclassified the case from a missing‑persons enquiry to kidnapping and car hijacking. Additional charges, including house robbery and theft of motor vehicle parts, are expected once investigations conclude.

Aserie Ndlovu, founder of Capital Live FM, and his partner were reported missing on 18 February 2025, prompting extensive enquiries by a specialised multidisciplinary team. Units involved include crime and counter‑intelligence, the cyber‑crime unit, organised crime detectives, serious and violent crimes detectives, the SAPS Air Wing, and drone pilots.

“The search remains ongoing for the missing couple and any other suspects. This is a developing case,” the SAPS said in a statement on Monday.

Deputy Minister in the Presidency Kenny Morolong visited Ndlovu’s family on 4 May 2025 to offer government support and solidarity. “While investigations are still underway, I commend the investigating team for their progress thus far. We continue to hope and pray for the safe return of both Mr Ndlovu and Ms Mdhluli,” Morolong remarked.

One suspect is set to appear before the Mamelodi Magistrates’ Court in Pretoria on 6 May 2025, while the other three will face the KwaMhlanga Magistrates’ Court later this week.

National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola also welcomed the arrests, describing them as a “significant step forward” in resolving the case and bringing those responsible to justice.
