Nine Held for Illegal Mining, Immigration

Operation Vala Umgodi in Mpumalanga led to the arrest of nine suspects on 16 May 2025 in the Barberton area. Among the suspects, seven were identified as undocumented foreign nationals, while two were charged with possession of precious metal.

The ongoing operation, which targets illegal mining activities across the province, included stop-and-search efforts along the R38 road in Barberton. During one such stop, officers pulled over a black BMW with Gauteng registration plates. A search of the vehicle uncovered illicit mining equipment, including jackhammers, a block of precious metal, a chisel, and a bottle of mercury.

All nine suspects, aged between 20 and 49, were arrested on the spot. The vehicle and equipment were confiscated by authorities.

The suspects are expected to appear before the Barberton Magistrate’s Court on 19 May 2025. They face charges relating to contravention of the Immigration Act and unlawful possession of precious metal.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, welcomed the arrests and praised the diligence of the officers involved. He reaffirmed the police’s commitment to eradicating illegal mining in the province and assured the public that further breakthroughs are anticipated as Operation Vala Umgodi gains momentum.
