MPUMALANGA INTERNATIONAL FOOD MARKET BEGINS OPERATIONS, PROMISING THOUSANDS OF JOBS

The Mpumalanga International Food Market has officially commenced operations, marking a significant milestone in the province’s agricultural development and efforts to create sustainable employment opportunities.

Mpumalanga Premier Mandla Ndlovu announced the commencement of operations on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, confirming that farmers are already delivering produce to the facility, with trading activities underway.

The President of the Republic is expected to visit the market to officially open the facility and engage with farmers, traders and buyers. The visit is anticipated to highlight the market’s importance in improving market access for farmers, boosting agricultural trade and strengthening the province’s food production value chain.

The facility has already created 47 direct jobs, with the number expected to increase to approximately 156 once the market reaches full operational capacity. An additional 4,033 indirect jobs are projected across farming, value addition, transportation, logistics and related economic activities.

Meanwhile, 1,153 jobs have been created through small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) benefiting from the Agrofund programme. These businesses are expected to supply produce to the market, providing local entrepreneurs with opportunities to participate in the agricultural value chain.

The recruitment process for the market was conducted through the Department of Employment and Labour to promote fairness, transparency and equal opportunities for prospective employees.

The commencement of operations is expected to strengthen support for local farmers, improve access to markets and stimulate rural economic development across Mpumalanga.

As the facility expands its operations, it is anticipated to improve connections between agricultural production, processing, distribution and logistics, while creating opportunities for farmers and small businesses to grow their operations.

The Mpumalanga International Food Market is therefore positioned to become an important driver of agricultural growth, job creation and inclusive economic development in the province.
