Eskom Targets Year Without Load Shedding

Eskom is setting its sights on achieving a full year without load shedding, a goal it hopes to reach by midnight on March 26, 2025. The announcement comes as the utility celebrates 300 consecutive days without implementing rolling blackouts—a significant milestone for South Africa’s often-strained power supply system.

“Credit goes to all our 40,000 dedicated and skilled Eskom employees, who are committed to serving South Africa,” said Eskom’s Group Executive for Generation, Bheki Nxumalo. “Our sights are now firmly focused on delivering one year without load shedding.”

The past 300 days have seen remarkable improvements in Eskom’s operational performance. One of the key achievements has been a 7% increase in the energy availability factor, a reduction in unplanned outages, and a massive saving of R16.42 billion in diesel expenditure.

Eskom’s Group Chief Executive, Dan Marokane, noted that these improvements are part of a broader effort to steer the utility toward financial and operational stability. “The savings we are making in diesel spend are being reinvested to drive efficiencies further and place Eskom on a path to profitability. Public sentiment is shifting, and business leaders who once relied on self-generation are reconsidering Eskom for their power needs,” said Marokane.

Plans Backed by Strategic Initiatives

The turnaround is attributed to the successful implementation of two key strategies: the Energy Action Plan introduced by President Cyril Ramaphosa in July 2022 and Eskom’s own Generation Recovery Plan. Together, these initiatives have helped stabilize the utility’s operations, reduce load shedding, and foster confidence in Eskom’s ability to deliver reliable electricity.

Nxumalo emphasized the importance of collaboration in reaching this milestone. “We express our gratitude to all stakeholders, including the Minister of Electricity and Energy, the Eskom Board, government, and the National Energy Crisis Committee. Their collective efforts have been instrumental in addressing South Africa’s electricity challenges,” he said.

Focus Areas for the Future

As Eskom moves forward, it plans to continue implementing its generation recovery strategy while addressing systemic issues such as governance weaknesses, crime, and corruption. These measures aim to ensure the utility’s long-term sustainability and contribute to South Africa’s economic growth.

Eskom is also looking to “future-proof” its operations to support energy security not only for South Africa but also for the broader sub-Saharan region. By reinvesting savings and focusing on operational efficiency, the utility hopes to enhance its reliability as a power supplier and position itself as a cornerstone of regional development.

The achievement of 300 days without load shedding has not only saved billions in diesel costs but has also shifted public perception. Businesses that previously invested in private power generation are now reconsidering Eskom as a dependable source of electricity.
