BMA LAUNCHES VEHICLE TARGETING SYSTEM TO COMBAT CROSS-BORDER VEHICLE SMUGGLING

The Border Management Authority (BMA), led by Commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato, launched its latest digital transformation initiative, the Vehicle Targeting System (VTS), at the Lebombo Port of Entry in Komatipoort on Sunday, 18 October 2026.
The VTS was a joint initiative between the BMA and the International Vehicle Identification Desk. The partnership was established through a Memorandum of Understanding and implemented in line with the Authority’s mandate under the Border Management Authority Act 2 of 2020.
The system was introduced in response to concerns over vehicle theft and cross-border vehicle smuggling. Its primary objective was to replace indiscriminate manual vehicle inspections with an intelligence-led approach that enabled officers to target vehicles for inspection based on relevant data and risk indicators rather than conducting random checks.

As part of its digital transformation journey, the BMA aimed to move away from repetitive and inefficient manual inspections towards technology-driven, intelligence-led interceptions.
The introduction of the VTS was expected to strengthen border security, improve operational efficiency and enhance the Authority’s ability to detect and combat cross-border vehicle smuggling.
