A 21-year-old author is using her personal struggles to spark tough conversations and inspire young people to make better life choices.

Lerato, the voice behind They Tried to Break Me and The Spiral: How Fun Became Destruction, is emerging as a powerful storyteller tackling issues of pain, resilience and consequences.

Her journey into writing began during one of the most difficult periods of her life.

“I had been carrying a lot of pain, experiences and emotions for too long,” she said. “Writing became my outlet and a way to turn my story into something that could help others.”

In her debut memoir, Lerato opens up about emotional struggles that once left her feeling overwhelmed and lost, but which ultimately shaped her strength and self-awareness.

“It was a very painful period, but it taught me resilience and the importance of speaking out,” she said.

Originally from Kamhlushwa in Nkomazi, Lerato uses her second book to shift focus toward the realities facing many young people today — highlighting how situations that seem harmless can gradually spiral into destruction.

“I want young people to understand that not everything that looks fun is safe or lasting,” she said. “No matter what they go through, they still have the power to rise and rebuild their lives.”

Now, the 21-year-old is looking to bring her message directly to communities.

She has expressed interest in engaging with schools and youth groups in Bushbuckridge, where she hopes her story will encourage reflection, awareness and better decision-making.

“I want to inspire, motivate and create awareness,” she added.

As challenges facing young people continue to grow, Lerato’s story stands as a reminder that even the most painful experiences can be turned into purpose.
