Police in Mpumalanga have opened a murder case following the discovery of three burnt bodies in dense bush near the R535 between Hazyview and Graskop on Wednesday, 22 April 2026.

According to a media statement issued by the South African Police Service, the bodies were found burned beyond recognition, prompting an urgent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

Authorities have indicated that they are working to determine whether the victims could be linked to a kidnapping case reported in Nelspruit on 14 April 2026. At this stage, police say they cannot yet confirm any connection.

A 29-year-old male suspect has been taken in for questioning in relation to both the kidnapping and murder cases. Police have not disclosed further details as investigations continue.

The Provincial Commissioner’s office confirmed that efforts are underway to identify the victims and establish the motive behind the killings.

Anyone with information that may assist the investigation is urged to contact the authorities.
