The Mpumalanga Department of Health has officially launched a new Dialysis Unit at Rob Ferreira Hospital, marking a significant step in expanding specialised renal care in the province.

The unit was launched today 23 April 2026 by Health MEC Sasekani Manzini, who described the development as a major milestone in improving access to life-saving treatment closer to communities.

The facility is equipped with 24 dialysis machines and chairs and has the capacity to treat up to 18 patients per session. It operates 24 hours a day, ensuring continuous care for patients with kidney failure.

According to the department, the unit has already conducted 11,194 dialysis sessions between April 2025 and March 2026. Officials also reported zero mortality within the unit during this period, highlighting the strength of clinical care and patient safety systems.

A key achievement noted during the launch is the full insourcing of all dialysis patients by April 2026, reducing reliance on outsourced services and strengthening the public healthcare system’s capacity.

The department says the development will significantly reduce long-distance travel for patients and improve access to consistent treatment.

Officials have described the project as part of a broader commitment to improving dignity, access, and quality healthcare services across Mpumalanga, in line with the goal of “taking healthcare services to the people.”
