Former Public Protector Busisiwe Joyce Mkhwebane has been sworn in as a Member of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature.

The swearing-in ceremony was presided over by the Speaker of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature, Makhosazane Masilela, who administered the oath of office to Advocate Mkhwebane during a formal sitting of the Legislature.

Advocate Mkhwebane replaces Mary Morongwe Phadi, who previously served as a Member of the Legislature and as leader of the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) in the provincial legislature. Phadi’s tenure came to an end after the Mpumalanga High Court ruled on 8 July 2025 that she was no longer a member of the MKP and therefore no longer a lawful member of the provincial legislature.

The ruling followed the provisions of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, which states that if a person’s membership of the political party that nominated them to the legislature is terminated, they automatically cease to be a member of that legislature.

During the ceremony, Advocate Mkhwebane took the oath of office and pledged to uphold the Constitution and perform her duties with integrity, honesty and dedication in service of the people of Mpumalanga.

In her remarks after being sworn in, she thanked her party for the trust placed in her and affirmed her commitment to contributing meaningfully to the work of the provincial legislature. She said she would work towards advancing the interests of residents across the province.

Speaker Masilela congratulated the new MPL and wished her well in carrying out her responsibilities. She emphasised that the Legislature plays a crucial role in holding the provincial executive accountable and ensuring that government delivers services effectively to communities. Masilela also highlighted the importance of ethical leadership and strong governance in strengthening accountability within the province.
