Police in Mpumalanga have intensified safety operations across the province as part of Easter weekend law enforcement efforts under Operation Paseka.

The operation focuses on increasing police visibility and strengthening law enforcement to ensure the safety of residents and visitors travelling across the province during the Easter period.

Roadblocks have been set up on national, regional, and other major roads, where officers are conducting inspections to detect illicit goods, illegal activities, and reckless or negligent driving. Authorities are also targeting drunken driving, which remains one of the major contributors to road fatalities during holiday periods.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, Zeph Mkhwanazi, has called on communities to cooperate with law enforcement officials during the Easter weekend.

“We appeal to the community to cooperate with police officers, obey road rules, refrain from drinking and driving and be active partners in ensuring a peaceful Easter weekend. From the side of the police, we are doing our part as we have intensified operations and deployed more boots on the ground,” said Mkhwanazi.

Police say the continued operations form part of ongoing efforts to ensure safer communities and maintain law and order during the busy Easter travel period.
