Police in Calcutta are investigating a case of double murder and attempted murder following a shooting incident in Senyameni on the evening of Wednesday, 25 March 2026.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting near a stream at approximately 19:49. Upon arrival, they discovered a white Toyota double cab with Mpumalanga registration at the scene.

Inside the vehicle, police found the body of a 28-year-old woman who had sustained gunshot wounds to her upper body.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the victims were travelling home when they were approached by two unknown armed suspects who opened fire on the vehicle. The driver reportedly attempted to back up to escape, but lost control and struck a ditch, bringing the vehicle to a stop.

A 49-year-old man who was also in the vehicle sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to the hospital, where he later died. A three-year-old child who was present during the incident survived and is being treated as a victim of attempted murder.

The suspects, believed to be two armed males, fled the scene and have not yet been identified. The motive for the attack remains unknown.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, condemned the attack, describing it as senseless and deeply concerning.

“We condemn this violent attack in the strongest possible terms. Our members are working tirelessly to ensure those responsible are brought to justice,” he said.
