Police in Bushbuckridge have launched a murder investigation following the death of a 30-year-old man who was allegedly assaulted by community members in Dwarsloop Phase One.
According to reports, the man was accused by residents of committing criminal activities. It is alleged that members of the community confronted him before assaulting him, leaving him critically injured.
Community members have alleged that the man was caught attempting to rape a woman who was returning from work. It is further claimed that he was taken by car to a house in Phase One, where the alleged assault took place.
Residents also claim that one community member contacted the police at around 19:00, but officers only arrived at the scene at approximately 22:00. These claims have not yet been officially confirmed by authorities.
The victim was later transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
“No arrests have been made at this stage, and investigations are ongoing,” police confirmed.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has strongly condemned the incident, warning against acts of vigilantism.
“SAPS strongly condemns acts of vigilantism and urges community members to refrain from taking the law into their own hands. Such actions undermine the rule of law and may result in further criminal charges,” the statement read.
