A heartwarming act of generosity by an eight-year-old boy has sparked a growing initiative aimed at restoring dignity among underprivileged learners.

Kemoratile Mokoena, together with his father Freddy Mokoena of the Mathibela Tribal Authority, donated school shoes to learners at Plaatjie Primary School on the morning of 24 March, marking a meaningful celebration of his father’s birthday.

The initiative began in recent weeks, when Freddy Mokoena and the Mathibela Tribal Authority identified children in need and tried to bridge the gap by providing practical support. 

Speaking during the handover, Freddy Mokoena explained that the idea to donate school shoes particularly on his birthday was inspired by his son’s compassionate gesture.

According to Mokoena, young Kemoratile approached him one day and expressed a desire to give away one of his two pairs of school shoes to his friend at school who did not have any. Initially thinking it was a passing comment, Mokoena was surprised when a teacher from the school contacted him the following day enquiring about the shoes Kemoratile wants to give away. 

“That moment showed me the kind of heart my child has,” he said.

The simple act of kindness has since grown into a broader effort to support disadvantaged learners. On March 24, six children received new school shoes—an intervention that not only meets a basic need but also restores confidence and dignity both inside and outside the classroom.

Also present at the event was Patricia Mgwenya from PEP Stores in Mkhuhlu, who donated sanitary towels to female learners. She highlighted an ongoing initiative by the retailer that encourages customers to support young girls in need.

Mgwenya explained that shoppers are encouraged to use their spare change to purchase a pack of sanitary towels and donate it at any PEP store. Each store has a designated collection box, and donated items are marked with stickers to ensure they are not resold.

“This is to close the gap of lack, we all lack in different ways but we need to help where we can,” she said.

The event served not only as a birthday celebration but also as a powerful reminder of how small acts of kindness can ripple through a community. What began as a young boy’s selfless decision has now become a beacon of hope—demonstrating that compassion knows no age.
