Police in Mpumalanga have opened a murder and inquest investigation following a tragic incident involving a SAPS captain in Grootvlei.
The 53-year-old officer allegedly shot and killed his 39-year-old female friend before turning the firearm on himself on Saturday, 21 March 2026.
It is reported that the captain, who was based at Bethal Police Station, went to the woman’s home where she was with her sister. After they refused to open the door, he allegedly forced entry by breaking a window.
Police say the sister managed to flee and seek help, prompting authorities to respond to the scene. Upon arrival, officers found both the captain and the woman lying inside the house with gunshot wounds. They were declared dead at the scene. A service pistol issued to the officer was recovered.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, expressed sadness over the incident and extended condolences to the families of the deceased.
He also urged police members to make use of Employee Health and Wellness (EHW) services when facing personal or work-related challenges.
