The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) carried out arrests of several officials within the Department of Education in Mpumalanga on Sunday, 23 February 2026.

The arrests form part of ongoing efforts to combat corruption and misconduct within government departments. Acting in line with recent pronouncements by President Cyril Ramaphosa during the State of the Nation Address (SONA), the operation reflects a commitment to building a capable, ethical and developmental state.

Premier Mandla Ndlovu welcomed the arrests and encouraged the Department of Education to assess the impact on internal operations, service delivery, and staff morale. He emphasised that the law must take its course and reminded communities that those arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The Premier also underlined the importance of ensuring that the arrests do not disrupt the delivery of critical education services. “The Mpumalanga Provincial Government remains committed to fostering a stable and effective education system that prioritises the well-being and future of our youth,” he said.

The operation highlights the provincial government’s ongoing collaboration with law enforcement agencies to ensure accountability and integrity in public service.
