The MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Mme Violet Mathye, has commended the South African Police Service (SAPS) for its crime-fighting efforts after provincial crime statistics showed an overall improvement.

Mathye joined SAPS Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen Thembi Hadebe at the SAPS provincial offices in Polokwane for the presentation of the third-quarter crime statistics for the 2025/2026 financial year. The figures revealed a 5.8% decrease in overall provincial crime, compared to the same period last year. However, the report also recorded a 5.9% increase in murder cases, highlighting ongoing challenges in tackling violent crime.

In her address, MEC Mathye acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cluster, stressing the importance of continued cooperation in addressing key safety concerns across communities. She praised SAPS for their visible crime-combating efforts, which have contributed to the overall decline in crime levels.

“To the Provincial Commissioner and the top management, we commend your efforts. Nevertheless, more work remains. My office, through the HoD, remains committed to providing assistance as required,” said Mathye, reaffirming her department’s commitment to strengthening community safety.

The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety said it remains dedicated to supporting law enforcement agencies and stakeholders in efforts to reduce crime and improve safety across the province.
