The Mpumalanga Department of Education has expressed shock and deep sadness following the tragic death of a 19-year-old Grade 11 learner at LD Moetanalo Secondary School in the Steve Tshwete Circuit 1, within the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, 20 January 2026, while learners were changing classes on the school premises. It is alleged that an altercation broke out between two learners, during which the victim was stabbed. Emergency medical personnel were called to the scene and later certified the learner deceased.

School management acted promptly by informing the learner’s parents and reporting the matter to the South African Police Service. Police investigations are currently under way, and a fellow learner is alleged to be involved in the incident. The suspect reportedly fled the scene and is being sought by authorities.

The Department of Education has strongly condemned the incident, emphasising that violence in schools poses a serious threat to the safety and wellbeing of learners, educators and support staff. Such acts also undermine the constitutional right to education and the creation of safe learning environments.

In response to the tragedy, the MEC for Education in Mpumalanga, Ms Lindi Masina, is expected to visit the school and the bereaved family on Wednesday, 21 January 2026. The visit aims to convey condolences, assess the situation on the ground and receive a detailed report on the incident.

Officials from the Department’s Inclusive Education and Wellness Unit have also been deployed to provide psychosocial support to learners, educators and staff affected by the incident.

The Department has extended its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and the entire LD Moetanalo Secondary School community during this painful time.

May the learner’s soul rest in peace.
