A 45-year-old man has been arrested for murder following a domestic violence incident in which a 37-year-old woman was killed at Mashonamini Trust in Calcutta.

The incident took place on Thursday morning, 8 January 2026. According to police, officers received a complaint at about 08:00 reporting that a woman had allegedly been assaulted with a wooden stick by her husband.

Police responded promptly and were directed to a room at the residence, where the victim was found lying on the floor with no signs of life. Emergency Medical Services were called to the scene and confirmed that the woman had died.

At around 08:45, the suspect reportedly handed himself over to the police. He was immediately arrested and charged with murder.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Mkhuhlu Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 9 January 2026.

Police have reiterated that gender-based violence will not be tolerated and urged members of the public to seek help when experiencing conflict or abuse in their relationships.
