The Phase Four community of Kwa-Guqa in Emhalenhle is reeling after the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Bolt driver Mxolisi Welcome Mphila by police on Saturday, 1 November 2025 — an incident clouded by conflicting accounts and rising public anger.
According to the family, Mphila was unarmed and surrendering when he was shot in the chest by police officers during what they describe as a case of mistaken identity. His family, explained that the tragedy unfolded around 14:00 at a local park shortly after Mphila attended a funeral with friends.
Family members stated that Mphila was unable to run far because of a previous knee injury and attempted to surrender, raising his hands to comply. They allege that he was shot despite not posing any threat. They also claim that police left the scene while he was still alive and that emergency services took too long to arrive. The family has since lodged a complaint with the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).
Angry residents allegedly retaliated by pelting police vehicles with stones, forcing officers to withdraw from the area. However, police have presented a different version of events.
Mpumalanga SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabulile Ndubane stated that officers were acting on credible intelligence about armed hijacking suspects in the Vosman area. When approached, the suspects reportedly opened fire, prompting police to return fire in self-defence. An unlicensed firearm with its serial number removed was found at the scene.
Police also reported that a Community Police Forum member assisting during the operation was shot and wounded. Following the unrest, four individuals were arrested for malicious damage to property and attempted murder.
Authorities have appealed for calm as investigations continue, while Mphila’s family continues to demand justice and answers for what they believe was the unlawful killing of an innocent man.
