After more than two years in hiding, a 41-year-old fugitive, Sibusiso Sibiya, has finally been brought before the Volksrust District Court to face charges for the brutal murder of his fiancée, Amanda Khumalo.

Sibiya appeared in court on Monday, 6 October 2025, following his arrest in Durban last Friday. He had been on the run since February 2023, when he allegedly stabbed Khumalo multiple times at their home in Vukuzakhe, Volksrust, in full view of their two children. The children managed to escape and alert neighbours.

Police investigations later suggested that Sibiya had fled to Eswatini, where he is also suspected of involvement in another murder case linked to a romantic partner.

After an extensive two-year manhunt, detectives from Durban Central — working closely with police in Mpumalanga — tracked Sibiya to a lodge in Durban. Officers moved swiftly to arrest him before he could allegedly carry out another plot involving his children.

Sibiya has been remanded in custody and is expected to return to court on 27 October 2025 for a formal bail application.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, praised the coordinated effort that led to the arrest.

“This arrest demonstrates that the long arm of the law always catches up with those who commit violent crimes. We will continue to work diligently to ensure that criminals are brought to book,” said Major General (Dr) Mkhwanazi.

The police have reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that justice is served, no matter how long it takes.
