A dramatic confrontation in the Crocodile Bridge section of Kruger National Park has left a suspected poacher injured and in custody, while his accomplice remains at large. The incident, which took place on Thursday evening, 18 September 2025, highlights ongoing tensions between wildlife protection efforts and illegal hunting activity. 

According to Mpumalanga police, field rangers first discovered human footprints during a routine patrol around 07:30 that morning. They followed the tracks toward the park’s southern boundary as part of a follow-up operation. 

At approximately 20:00, two armed suspects were spotted moving toward the rangers. When ordered to stop, they attempted to flee and scaled a nearby fence. During the pursuit, one suspect allegedly raised a rifle at the rangers, prompting them to open fire in self-defence. Both made it over the fence. One dropped his weapon and collapsed near a sugarcane field; the other fled into the fields and has not yet been found. 

The detained 32-year-old suspect was found with a backpack containing two rhino horns and a knife. He failed to produce any permits for his presence in the park or for the firearm. He is facing charges including trespassing, illegal hunting, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and possession of a dangerous weapon. After receiving medical treatment, he will appear in the Masoyi Periodical Court once fit. 

Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi warned that anyone threatening field rangers or endangered wildlife will face legal consequences.
