Five suspects, aged between 29 and 43, are set to appear before the Balfour Magistrate’s Court today, Friday, 19 September 2025, following their arrest in Greylingstad earlier this week.

According to police reports, officers were conducting patrols along the R23 Road in the early hours of Wednesday, 17 September 2025, when they spotted a suspicious vehicle carrying a heavy load. On stopping the car, which carried five occupants, officers discovered a bulk of meat believed to have come from recently slaughtered animals.

The suspects failed to provide proof of ownership or identify the source of the meat. They were immediately arrested and charged with possession of suspected stolen property. Police have not ruled out the possibility of adding stock theft charges as investigations continue.

Investigators have since traced a complainant who recently reported stolen livestock, and it is believed the recovered meat may belong to them.
