In response to escalating criminal activities in Mpumalanga schools, law enforcement agencies have intensified efforts to ensure student safety. Recent search-and-seizure operations in high-risk schools have led to the confiscation of dangerous weapons and drugs, highlighting the severity of the issue.

Students have voiced concerns about their safety, citing incidents of outsiders entering school premises and engaging in gang-related activities, particularly near restrooms. One student reported, “There’s a hole behind the toilets, and boys who aren’t from our school come in. They sit near the door with knives, and we don’t feel safe anymore.”

Parents have welcomed the police interventions, acknowledging the growing problem of weapons and drugs in schools. A parent representative stated that they had previously requested regular police searches to curb the issue.

Provincial authorities have confirmed that these operations are part of a broader effort to combat crime in Masoyi, an area identified among the top 30 in Mpumalanga for serious and contact crimes. The provincial security cluster announced plans to extend the school safety program to other high-risk schools in the region.
