Eighteen people have lost their lives in road crashes across Mpumalanga since the start of the Easter weekend, prompting serious concern from authorities and road safety advocates.

The crashes occurred between Thursday, 17 April, and the end of the Easter long weekend. According to the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, many of these accidents were caused by reckless driving, speeding, and alcohol abuse.

MEC Jackie Macie has urged motorists to obey traffic laws and prioritise safety during this busy travel season. “We are saddened by the loss of lives on our roads. It is time for drivers to act responsibly. The rules are there to protect everyone,” said Macie.

Law enforcement officers have intensified operations throughout the province, conducting roadblocks and inspections on major routes. More than 100 motorists have already been arrested for alleged drinking and driving.

In addition to drunk driving arrests, traffic officers have issued several fines for unroadworthy vehicles, failure to wear seatbelts, and overloading.

Macie emphasised that traffic operations will continue across the province to prevent further incidents. “Our officers are out in full force to ensure that our roads are safer for everyone. We are appealing to road users to cooperate,” he said.

Emergency services have also been deployed to assist with accident scenes and offer support where needed. Authorities are calling on the public to report reckless driving and unsafe behaviour to help curb the high number of road fatalities.

As families return from the Easter holidays, officials continue to stress the importance of responsible driving to avoid more tragedies on Mpumalanga’s roads.
