Mpumalanga is grappling with a deadly challenge as ongoing rains turn rivers and dams into perilous zones. The South African Police Service (SAPS) has issued an urgent warning to residents to avoid water bodies or risk becoming victims of the flood crisis.

Rising Toll of Drowning Incidents

The province has witnessed a string of drowning cases since the rains began, with new tragedies reported almost daily.

• In Tonga, SAPS rescue teams narrowly saved a young woman swept away by a river’s strong currents, but two others remain missing.
• Piet Retief has two individuals unaccounted for after being carried off by raging waters last week.
• In KaNyamazane, a man was swept away in residential floodwaters.
• eMbalenhle saw two victims lose their lives to similar conditions.
• In Gert Sibande District, a house collapse due to flooding claimed another life.

Police Plea for Public Cooperation

SAPS acting provincial commissioner, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, appealed for public vigilance and cooperation.

“We urge all residents to avoid rivers, dams, and lakes completely and to immediately report to emergency services for assistance,” Mkhwanazi said.

He acknowledged that the region’s heat often drives people to water bodies for relief but emphasized the critical need for caution.
