Cease Agreement Reached

South Africa has called for a just and lasting peace that safeguards the human rights of both Palestinians and Israelis following confirmation of a ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel after 15 months of conflict.

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) welcomed the truce, which, according to mediators, is set to take effect on Sunday, January 19, 2025, if approved.

“This is a crucial step toward ending the humanitarian crisis faced by the 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza,” said DIRCO in a statement.

Humanitarian Crisis

The conflict has claimed the lives of at least 46,707 Palestinians and left 110,265 injured since October 7, 2023. On the same day, Hamas-led attacks in Israel killed 1,139 people, with over 200 taken captive.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has raised concerns that the situation may constitute genocide. DIRCO has reiterated the need for adherence to international and humanitarian law, emphasizing the importance of preventing land annexation and halting illegal settlement expansion.

A Just Peace

DIRCO highlighted that the ceasefire should pave the way for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as massive humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

“All obstacles to delivering aid must be lifted immediately and unconditionally, ensuring access to food, water, shelter, and healthcare,” the department said.

Global Mediation

The truce follows months of intense diplomatic efforts by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States. Outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden, in a statement, lauded the agreement, expressing hope for the release of hostages and a path toward reconciliation.

“My diplomacy never ceased in their efforts to get this done – I am thrilled that those who have been held hostage are being reunited with their families,” Biden said.
