South Africa has made significant progress in expanding education access, but Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube stresses the urgent need to improve its quality. The goal is to equip learners with skills that prepare them for higher education or employment.
Speaking at the 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) results announcement on January 13, the Minister highlighted gaps in foundational literacy and numeracy skills, which hinder success in critical subjects like Mathematics and Physical Sciences. These deficits also reduce learners’ opportunities for further education and employment.
Strengthening Early Foundations
To address these issues, the Department of Basic Education plans to refocus on foundational learning:
- Expanding Early Childhood Development (ECD): The government aims for universal ECD access by 2030, emphasizing formal registration of ECD centres, enhanced resources for rural areas, and alignment with the National Curriculum Framework.
- Improving Teacher Training: Literacy and numeracy in the Foundation Phase will be prioritized, with the Funza Lushaka Bursary Scheme supporting aspiring Foundation Phase teachers.
- Updating Systems and Materials: Outdated Post Provisioning Norms will be revised to improve Grade R access. Additionally, updated learning materials will ensure curriculum relevance and inclusivity.
Maximizing Classroom Time
Minister Gwarube emphasized the need to protect teaching and learning time. Teachers must cover the full curriculum during the 230 annual school days to improve education outcomes.
Record NSC Results
A record-breaking 615,429 learners passed the NSC in 2024, marking the highest number in South Africa’s history. The national pass rate increased to 87.3%, up from 82.9% in 2023.
These efforts aim to build a robust education system that empowers learners for personal success and contributes to South Africa’s growth.
