The death toll from the January 11 shooting at Dludlu Tavern in Pienaar has risen from six to eight, with two victims succumbing to their injuries in the hospital.
Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, provincial police spokesperson, confirmed that six individuals were fatally shot at the scene. Two additional victims, a male and a female, later died from their injuries. Three others, two males and a female, are still receiving medical treatment.
“Two VW Polos at the scene were riddled with bullet holes. One victim was found dead inside one of the vehicles. The motive for the shooting remains unclear, and a team of investigation experts has been assembled to handle the case. A 72-hour activation plan is in place to expedite the investigation,” said Ndubane.

Jackie Macie, MEC for the Department of Community Safety, Security, and Liaison, condemned the incident. “We strongly condemn this barbaric and senseless loss of lives. We urge the community to allow the police time to investigate thoroughly. The perpetrators must be brought to justice.”
Macie also appealed to liquor traders to prioritize patron safety and extended condolences to the victims’ families while wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
