Mpumalanga Premier Mandla Ndlovu recently convened an executive council (Exco) sitting in Mbombela to implement measures aimed at improving socio-economic conditions. This aligns with the seventh administration’s priorities to promote inclusive growth, create jobs, reduce poverty, and build a capable, ethical, and developmental state.

Infrastructure development and service delivery are key focus areas, including completing major projects such as the Mpumalanga International Fresh Produce Market (MIFPM). Officially handed over on August 1, the R1.7 billion MIFPM will boost the province’s economy by facilitating agricultural exports and creating direct and indirect jobs.

The market, initially launched in November 2018, faced delays due to community unrest, worker protests, and other interruptions. It is now ready to provide access to local, regional, and international fresh produce markets. It includes agroprocessing facilities, roads, parking, and related infrastructure.

During the Exco sitting, MEC Thulasizwe Thomo, the council’s spokesperson, confirmed the MIFPM is complete, with measures underway for operationalisation. “It is Mpumalanga’s first large-scale market infrastructure, poised to create employment opportunities through agricultural exports,” he said.

To support this initiative, Premier Ndlovu will lead a mission to China from January 14 to 20, focusing on Tianshui City, Longricunan City, and Xiamen City. The delegation, including senior officials, will sign agreements with major trade institutions to establish co-operation in the food industry and logistics for the MIFPM.
