Two foreign nationals, aged 33 and 39, were arrested in Mpumalanga on Sunday after being found in possession of explosives and other suspicious items, police confirmed.
Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli said the arrests were the result of efforts by the Combat and Proactive Unit under Operation Vala Umgodi, targeting illegal mining and other crimes in the province.
“The suspects were apprehended on the R38 Road near Consort Mine in Barberton. Police conducting vehicle checkpoints stopped a black BMW 1 Series with two occupants. During the search, explosives, jackhammers, water boots, and R10,000 in cash were discovered,” Mdhluli said.
The suspects reportedly failed to provide a valid explanation for possessing the items, leading to their arrest.
Pending Cases
One of the suspects was found to be out on bail for a separate case involving the illegal possession of a firearm. He is scheduled to appear in court on January 30, 2025, for that matter.
Both suspects will appear at the Barberton Magistrate’s Court on 07 January in connection with the explosives case.
Commendation for Police Efforts
The provincial acting police commissioner, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, commended the officers involved for their dedication to combating illegal mining and related activities.
“This arrest is a testament to the hard work and vigilance of our members in ensuring the safety of the community,” said Mkhwanazi.
